George Sgouros, Ph.d.


Dr. Sgouros is a Professor of Radiology and Oncology at Johns Hopkins University. He has over 20 years experience in modeling and dosimetry of internally administered radionuclides, with a particular emphasis on alpha-particle emitters and on using mathematical models to assess novel targeted therapy strategies. He is a pioneer in development of dosimetry methods for radiopharmaceutical therapies. He was the principal investigator of RAPID’s ICORPS and MII Phase I/II grant. He is the chair of the Medical Internal Radiation Dosimetry committee of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, He is a frequent advisor to the International Atomic Energy Agency on issues of radiopharmaceutical dosimetry. He served as the chair of the NIH Radiation Therapy and Biology study section, which reviews grant applications in this topic area. He served as chairman of the Dosimetry & Radiobiology Panel at a Department of Energy Workshop on alpha-emitters in medical therapy. His lab developed the patient-specific dosimetry software package, 3D-RD, that has been licensed by RAPID. This software forms the basis of the first treatment-planning based implementation of combined external beam radiotherapy and radiopharmaceutical therapy. His group has filed 6 patents related to 3D-RD and RPT dosimetry, 3 of which have been granted and have been licensed by RAPID.
