Rapid Awarded $2M NIH Grant to Develop Cloud-Based Quantitative SPECT Reconstruction Platform for Radiopharmaceutical Therapy

Baltimore, MD — 02/13/2025 – Radiopharmaceutical Imaging and Dosimetry, LLC (Rapid ®) has been awarded a $2M grant over two years from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This funding will support the implementation and optimization of its quantitative SPECT reconstruction methods in a cloud-based platform. The platform is designed to provide enhanced dosimetry for therapeutic radionuclides, with a focus on alpha-emitter radiopharmaceutical therapy (αRPT).

Radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) is an emerging field in cancer treatment, offering targeted radiation delivery to tumor cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. As the field advances, accurate dosimetry is essential for optimizing treatment, personalizing therapy, and securing regulatory approval. However, existing commercial SPECT/CT imaging software lacks the necessary reconstruction tools to support therapeutic radionuclides, particularly alpha-emitters like Ra-223, Th-227, Pb-212, and Ac-225.

Rapid’s new cloud-based platform will bridge this gap by providing quantitative SPECT imaging for clinical trials and future clinical use. The project aims to:

  • Integrate quantitative SPECT capabilities into Rapid’s cloud-based dosimetry platform, ensuring seamless workflow integration for researchers and clinicians.
  • Enhance accuracy of Rapid’s existing methods by optimizing scatter and collimator modeling while incorporating rigorous partial volume compensation and uncertainty estimation.
  • Develop rigorous and practical calibration methods to ensure consistent quantitative imaging across clinical sites.
  • Provide detailed and documented characterization of the software to establish precision, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

This research builds on Rapid’s commitment to advancing quantitative imaging and dosimetry solutions, supporting both clinical trials and the broader adoption of radiopharmaceutical therapy dosimetry in oncology.
